Bergsträsser Wines

2000 YEARS AGO, THE ROMANS DISCOVERED THE BEAUTY AND THE MILD CLIMATE OF THE “STRATA MONTANA”, THE “BERGSTRASSE”.

They planted the first vines on the sunlit hills of the region. Thus, on the slopes of the Odenwald, a wine-growing region has been created that has a lot to offer: Scenic beauty, medieval towns and a wine thriving in a pleasant climate.

The Hessian “Bergstraße” is the smallest of the 13 German wine-growing regions with barely 441.5 ha of vines. About 422 ha are yielding. About one quarter of the cultivated area are steep slopes. The growing area is characterized by the fact that on a very small area with many different soils a fairly large diversity of grapes are grown.

HESSIAN STATE VINEYARD

The winery of Monastery Eberbach, founded in 1136 by St. Bernard of Clairvaux (Burgundy),  made history with tireless striving for quality wine. Because of this, it was the largest German winery many centuries ago.

This continued with the secularization in 1803 by the Duke of Nassau, on from 1866 as a Royal Domaine of the Prussian State and since 1945 by the State of Hesse, as a shareholder of the winery.

The approximately 400 wine-grower families operate along the Hessian and Badische Bergstrasse vineyards in 17 individual areas on about 265 hectares of vineyards. The “Bergsträßer Winzer eG” covers more than half of the Bergsträßer vineyard. With this it is an important part of the local wine-growing community.

SIMON BÜRKLE

ENTHUSIASM FOR WINES THAT ARE JUST GOOD

The Simon-Bürkle winery was founded in 1991 by Kurt Simon, a native of Zwingenberg, and Wilfried Bürkle, born in Baden, after having met while studying viticulture at the “Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt” in Weinsberg. There was a strong bond between the two winemakers right from the beginning – characterized by true friendship, a common philosophy, quality and environmental awareness and creativity in nature. Enthusiasm for wines that are simply good, delight in wonderful wine aromas and the unity when it comes to fruit and clarity of the wines.

ROTHWEILER

Since 2010, the winery Rothweiler is located in the Berlin Ring 184 in Bensheim-Auerbach – with its red turret, which has become a landmark for a fine wine address.

Today, the winery manages about 5.5 hectares of vineyards in the areas “Zwingenberger Steingeröll”, “Auerbacher Fürstenlager”, “Auerbacher Rott”, “Bensheimer Wolfsmagen”, “Heppenheimer Steinkopf” and “Heppenheimer Eckweg”.

WEINGUT H. FREIBERGER

Founded in 1926, the family vineyard Freiberger, now with 16 hectares in size, is being continued in the 3rd generation. The starting point was a small vineyard at the steep Heppenheimer Maiberg in Germany’s smallest wine-growing region: the “Hessische Bergstraße”.

WEINBAU KOOB

In the smallest German cultivation area, the Hessian mountain road, the company “Weinbau Koob” lies. This is a traditional family business, which reoriented itself in 2014 to set new accents with the “Christina Koob” brand.

In the past, the mainstay of the parental business was in bull fattening. They parted ways with the bull fattening in 2013, so the young generation could pursue their dream of viticulture.
